George R. Thompson IV (EWOK HM AWR MSK) is an American painter, muralist, graphic designer, and graffiti writer whose work has helped define the visual language of contemporary graffiti for more than three decades. Through a practice rooted in the structure of the letter while continually expanding its possibilities, Thompson has developed one of the most distinctive and influential bodies of work to emerge from American graffiti.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thompson relocated to Minneapolis in the early 1990s to attend the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Immersed in the rapidly evolving Twin Cities graffiti movement, he became a founding member of HM (Heavy Metal), helping establish a distinctly Midwestern approach to letter-based painting characterized by technical precision, formal experimentation, and an unusually sophisticated understanding of composition. His work later gained international recognition through AWR (Art Work Rebels) and MSK (Mad Society Kings), placing him among the generation of artists who transformed graffiti from a regional subculture into a global visual movement.
Working under the name EWOK, Thompson has spent more than thirty years investigating the expressive potential of the letter. Influenced by the foundational graffiti publications Subway Art and Spraycan Art, alongside graphic design, Japanese animation, illustration, and contemporary painting, he developed a visual language that moves fluidly between representation and abstraction while remaining grounded in the formal discipline of lettering. Throughout decades of stylistic evolution, the letter has remained both the subject and the framework of his practice, serving as the foundation through which color, movement, texture, and spatial illusion are continually explored.
Rather than pursuing novelty for its own sake, Thompson's work reflects an ongoing process of refinement. His practice consistently returns to the essential concerns of graffiti: structure, proportion, rhythm, composition, and longevity. This sustained investigation has allowed his work to evolve dramatically while remaining unmistakably his own, balancing technical mastery with an enduring commitment to visual discovery.
Alongside his studio practice, Thompson has built an accomplished career as a muralist, designer, and commercial artist, collaborating with clients including RVCA, Reebok, and The Seventh Letter. Whether working on public walls, commercial commissions, paintings, or works on paper, his practice is unified by the same disciplined approach to form and an unwavering belief in the expressive potential of the letter.
Drawing has long occupied an essential place within Thompson's studio practice. Working with spray paint, marker, ink, and mixed media, his works on paper provide a space for sustained experimentation where gesture, rhythm, layering, and abstraction emerge with exceptional clarity. Rather than functioning as preparatory studies, these drawings stand as fully realized works that reveal the underlying architecture of his visual thinking while extending the vocabulary of graffiti into increasingly expansive painterly territory.
Today, Thompson's work moves seamlessly between graffiti, abstraction, and contemporary painting, challenging conventional distinctions between these disciplines while remaining firmly rooted in the culture and formal language from which it emerged. His influence can be seen in generations of artists drawn to his technical precision, inventive compositions, and unwavering commitment to advancing the possibilities of the letter.
