Chaka Mkali
This drawing marks Chaka Mkali’s second local exhibition — a group show that continued the political and personal themes explored in The Wretched of the Earth. Funded in part by MRAC and Compass, the drawing itself functioned as a visual calendar of events and performances related to the exhibition. Hosted by Main Perspective Gallery in the St. Anthony Main neighborhood and curated in collaboration with Roy Robal, the show reflected Mkali’s deepening engagement with community-based art, cultural critique, and self-inquiry.
The work also holds personal significance: it coincided with a major life transition, as the artist’s first daughter was born just one month before the exhibition opened. It stands as both a public and private marker — charting growth in both the artist’s creative practice and his life journey.
