This drawing is part of the As the Sun Sets, We Rise illustration series published in Colors Magazine (1993). In this work, Mkali explores a recurring visual motif: the equation. Rendered through symbolic and narrative imagery, the composition presents a formula—this image plus that image equals How to be a Better European. The piece critiques cultural assimilation and Eurocentric value systems, using a stark black-and-white palette to amplify the contrast between imposed identities and lived realities. It reflects Mkali’s early commitment to visual language as both analysis and resistance.
